Moving Checklist - A Timeline for Your Next Move

Moving to a new home or place is not an easy task. There are a lot of details to plan, and sometimes it can feel impossible to manage it all. However, with the right prep work, your next move can be one of ease instead of stress.

As we are currently in peak moving season (60% of moves happen between May + August) we thought it would be helpful to provide a few key preparation tasks and timelines to help get your move off on the right foot.

Moving Checklist

2-3 Month Prior

It should come as no surprise that our first key task in preparation for your move is to edit your spaces! Don’t pack things you don’t want to take to your next space. Go through each room of your house and purge. Do you wear all of the clothes in your closet? Do you really need three blenders? Do your children play with all of those toys?

By editing out the items you don’t want or need you reduce the amount of items you have to pack and move. Plus, that means less in moving costs, and a quicker unpack when you get to your new space!

5-6 Weeks Prior

Start using your perishable items that you don’t want to move. This could be frozen and canned foods. By doing this 5-6 weeks before the move you have time to take inventory of the items in your pantry and freezer and plan meals around those things.

1 Month Prior

Begin to pack items you don’t use very often. These things could be your out of season clothing or sports equipment, or even kitchen appliances that are rarely used. Anything you won’t need on hand is a great thing to get packed up and set aside.

1 Week Prior

Refill any of your prescriptions. With your move coming up, you will be busy managing the details and getting settled in your new space. The last thing you want to be worried about is running out of your medication and trying to rush to get it refilled.

A Few Days Prior

Pack an essentials bag. This should include things that you need often that you don’t want to have to go digging in boxes for. Pack a set of clothes, medicine, first aid kit, chargers, snacks, water bottles, and pet food.

Hire a Professional to Manage Your Move

Moving is a big job, and sometimes the best way to prepare is by asking for help. A professional organizer can not only help you to declutter your current space, but can also oversee your move day, and get you and your family unpacked into your new home.
